Pennsylvania, known as the Keystone State, is a commonwealth that was settled by William Penn, a noted Quaker. Dense concentrations of both Quakers and Amish can be found in various portions of the state, which includes rich farmland and mountainous terrain, as well as several rivers and one of the Great Lakes. Because of the presence of Lake Erie, Pennsylvania is a hugely important source of fresh water. Its climate is generally free of severe weather, apart from occasional blizzards and tornadoes. With its rich array of natural resources and its historically significant cities, Pennsylvania is a compelling state to visit. If you are interested in the Pennsylvania Dutch, you should plan a stop in Lancaster when you are in Pennsylvania. In Lancaster, you will find many Amish people working their farms and selling their goods, including homemade quilts and food, in the markets. Intercourse is another nearby town that has a heavy Amish population, and Dutch Wonderland is an amusement park geared toward younger children that is settled in the heart of Amish country.
If you like amusement parks, you should consider a stop in Hershey, the city named in honor of famed chocolatier Milton Hershey, creator of Hershey's chocolate. At Hersheypark, you will be able to get a glimpse of how the chocolate-making process works, and many other rides await as well. A smaller park is Waldameer in Erie, which is nestled just outside Presque Isle, the peninsula that serves as Erie's largest tourist attraction. Surrounded on three sides by Lake Erie, Presque Isle features miles of nature trails and several beaches where such activities as swimming, Frisbee-playing and kite-flying are encouraged. Because it was the site of a famous War of 1812 battle involving the Flagship Niagara, Erie is known as the Flagship City. Near Erie is Pittsburgh, the second-largest city in the state, known for its hilly terrain and its industrial history. Sports fans associate the city with several teams, most notably the Steelers, the football team whose gold and black colors are widely seen throughout Pennsylvania. Pittsburgh also features an aviary and several concert halls, as Pittsburgh regularly brings in big acts. Philadelphia is the most populous city in the state, and it boasts the most famous history, as it houses the Liberty Bell, which was a hub of activity during the Revolutionary War. If you visit Pennsylvania, you certainly will not run out of things to see.
