LocalPAGES Small Business of the Week Winner: White Rabbit Fusion Café!

Filed under: Company Headlines — Francesca @ 11:59 am

The LocalPAGES team is pleased to announce our Business of the Week winner, White Rabbit Fusion Café! Located at 8316 Winnetka Ave Canoga Park, CA 91306, this brick and mortar business is actually an offshoot of the White Rabbit Food Truck. Apparently, Angelenos loved the mobile food truck so much, that after just four months of being in operation, the owners of White Rabbit decided to set up a permanent “rabbit hole” in San Fernando Valley.

White Rabbit Fusion Café is mainly known for serving classic Filipino dishes with an American and Mexican twist. Their interesting menu includes Filipino favorites such as Chicken Adobo, Pork Sisig, Tocino, and more. However, instead of the traditional meat and rice combo, customers can order their choice of meat, and have it served as a Taco, Burrito, Quesadilla, or Carne Fries (they do serve rice as well, if you don’t want to go too crazy). Be sure to save some room, because their dessert menu is a treat, especially if you have a sweet tooth! The White Chocolate Champroado and Crème Brule Toast are highly recommended.

White Rabbit has also done a great job in terms of incorporating social media into their business. For instance, every Thursday, customers who check-in using Yelp, Facebook, or FourSquare will receive a free drink with their order. Friday, on the other hand is a day for White Rabbit’s online fans and followers, as each user gets a dollar off any combo meal. They also have “Top Secret Saturday” wherein White Rabbit will post a “Top Secret Word of the Day” via Twitter and Facebook. Mention that word, and you’ll get 10% off your order. Pretty sweet, right? Other White Rabbit Daily Specials include Taco Tuesdays, White Choc Wednesdays, and Family Sunday Fun Day.

It’s truly amazing how far this business has come in just a short period of time. According to White Rabbit’s founders, with just under $1000, they started experimenting with Filipino dishes in their home kitchen, and asked their friends and family to be taste testers. Their food truck was born on July 10, 2010, while the White Rabbit Fusion Café opened its doors on November 28 of that same year.

Can’t get enough of their scrumptious and creative dishes? Be sure to check their food truck website to see if the Rabbit is heading your way. Their food truck reaches all parts of LA county, from Burbank, to Arcadia, Cerritos, and even Pomona.

It doesn’t stop there. If you want the White Rabbit to hop into your party, then check out their catering options. They have several menu options, and can serve to up to 2000 people. To inquire about the catering services of this awesome fusion café, you may call them at 818-772-6900, or shoot them an email at catering@whiterabbitcafela.com

LocalPAGES Small Business of the Week Winner: Philippe The Original!

Filed under: Business of the Week — Francesca @ 11:59 am

The LocalPAGES team is pleased to announce our Business of the Week winner, Philippe The Original! Located at 1001 N. Alameda St. Los Angeles, CA, this treasured establishment is a classic go-to restaurant among Angelenos. They’re most well-known for their French Dipped Sandwich, and if you happen to be in Southern California, then Philippe’s is a must-try.

Philippe The Original was established by Philippe Mathieu in 1908. However, his signature product, the French Dipped Sandwich didn’t come into existence until ten years later. Apparently, while making a sandwich for a police officer, Mathieu accidentally dropped the slice of French roll into the roasting pan filled with juice that was still hot from the oven. The policemen took the sandwich anyway, and loved it. The next day, he went back to Philippe’s, took some friends with him, and asked for more of those sandwiches. Thus, the great product was born.

Over a hundred years have passed, but people still flock to Philippe The Original for those yummy French Dipped Sandwiches. They are served on a freshly baked French roll dipped in the natural gravy of the roasts, and come in either roast beef, roast pork, leg of lamb, turkey, or ham. Customers can also choose to add Swiss, American, Monterey Jack, or Blue cheese to their sandwich.  Aside from the famous sandwich, Philippe The Original also serves egg breakfasts, pancakes, and cereals for the first meal of the day, and customers can enjoy soups, salads, and other types of sandwiches for lunch and dinner. On a budget? Their items are also reasonably priced. Check out their menu and you’ll find that there’s hardly an item in there that costs over ten bucks.

People don’t just head to Philippe’s for the scrumptious food and great prices, though. The beloved restaurant has such a warm and fun aura that no other place can match. In fact, MacDonald Harris of the New York Times even wrote, “There is an air of camaraderie among the customers, a kind of unspoken friendliness and consideration that’s rare in a big city…” Indeed, the moment you walk into Philippe The Original, you will instantly know why and how it stood the test of time.

Can’t get enough of Phillipe’s? Bring home their hot mustard for only $4.25 a jar. The special sauce is made in their kitchen and is the perfect complement to their sandwiches. They also have an online store showcasing Philippe The Original merchandise. Swing by their website and check out their range of apparel, head gear, and accessories!

They also entertain take-out orders so if you want to buy lunch for the family (or the office), this wonderful sandwich restaurant in Los Angeles, CA may be reached at 213-628-3781.

The Dos and Don’ts of Internships

Filed under: Company Headlines — admin @ 4:00 pm

Intern Wanted

The emphasis on small business job creation often overshadows other ways in which a local company can contribute to the community. Those in need of extra assistance should consider taking on an intern instead of another paid employee. Interns rarely expect income; their motivation typically lies in gaining valuable experience within a particular industry. Still, hiring interns isn’t the equivalent of instituting slave labor. Rules and regulations vary by jurisdiction, and businesses need to get familiar with all applicable laws before putting out ads on Craigslist. If you don’t have time or a human resources department, then consult with a recruiter just to be on the safe side.

In general, internships must be highly structured and set specific goals. The old stereotypes about interns running ridiculous errands and performing other types of grunt work no longer apply. Today’s internships resemble mentor programs more than Cinderella stories. Since their work should be somewhat educational, interns require constant evaluation. Set up weekly performance reviews to offer praise and constructive criticism one on one. Speaking of meetings, there’s no reason to exclude interns from important discussions. After all, they need to feel as though they’re part of the team. Another way to help younger individuals adjust to a professional environment is to hire multiple interns at the same time. A group of people around the same age will be able to relate to each other, and eases some of the social pressures associated with the entering the workforce. The peer group also encourages a bit of healthy competition, which boosts productivity. College students are less likely to waste time on Facebook when they’re making new flesh friends.

Facebook raises another important issue: expectations. Establish clear cut boundaries during the interview and reaffirm them periodically. Emphasize completing tasks in a timely fashion and go over company policies regarding attire, tardiness, sick days, and social networking during business hours. Lots of places monitor internet activity and block access to certain websites. You don’t have to mention the observation, though. Some employers consider internet usage a kind of test for new staff members. An intern worth retaining or rehiring at some point would demonstrate the ability to avoid online temptation on the job. This level of restraint is rare in college students, but not unheard of. The same principles apply to cell phone calls or texting at the office. Never assume that new hires will automatically observe proper etiquette.
