Burbank is a California city dubbed "The Media Capital of the World." This name was given to the city because of the numerous film studios located here. Warner Brothers Entertainment, NBC, Walt Disney, and many others have headquarters in Burbank. The city was named after Dr. Burbank, a New Hampshire-born entrepreneur who invested heavily in Los Angeles real estate.
The first industry to have prominent effect in the neighborhood was aviation. The construction of Burbank Airport led to many jobs in the aviation field throughout the area. It wasn't until the 1960s and 70s that Burbank began to see more and more entertainment industry growth. Walt Disney originally wanted to build Disneyland in Burbank, but was turned away by the city council.
Obviously, Burbank has a rich cinematographic history. Perhaps the most famous film shot here is Casablanca. Since the filming started just months after the Pearl Harbor attack, most of the scenes were filmed on the lot. Filming near airports was prohibited, and the famous final scene was also shot at Warner Brothers studios.
Today, most studios allow visitors to tour movie sets. VIP studio tours are a leading attraction in this area. Since multiple companies have studios in Burbank, hotels are also numerous in the region. Universal Studios has an amusement park on its property, with much of its influence coming from movies filmed there.
Most residents of Burbank work in the entertainment industry, while visitors arrive to tour the film sets. The city is considered to be one of the safest in Los Angeles. Burbank is one of the only cities to ban smoking in almost all public areas. Due to the city's close proximity to the Los Angeles proper, residents choose to live in Burbank and commute to LA.
Aside from movie studios, the city is also home to other tourist attractions. The Starlight Bowl is an outdoor concert venue. The Equidome can be found at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center, and holds equestrian shows in addition to concerts. Bob's Big Boy Restaurant is the oldest Bob's Big Boy in America. It is located on Riverside Drive and is considered a California Historical Point of Interest.
Burbank Village is a popular shopping district. The city also has numerous parks and libraries. It is not just about the movie business here. If you choose to visit Burbank, make sure to come in the summer months. The beach is just a thirty minute drive away!
