Chula Vista's town was created by 1889, and incorporated by 1911. Just before World War II its population was about 5,000. In 1950, it had tripled to 16,000. It became one of the largest lemon growing centers in the world. Some of the events that affected Chula Vista's development was the Sweetwater Dam, and the Santa Fe Railroad to San Diego California. Chula Vista is San Diego's second largest city, and in Spanish it means beautiful view. Beautiful it is from its harbor off the Pacific ocean to the mountains. It is located about 7 miles from downtown San Diego and about 7 miles from the Mexican border, it covers about 50 square miles. The spring and summer are usually pleasant, around the 70s, and the fall and winter can get a little chilly in it's 50s.
