Palm Springs, California, is a city in Riverside County, California. It is located about 37 miles east of San Bernardino, 111 miles east of Los Angeles, and 136 miles northeast of San Diego. The city was originally a Native American reservation known as the Agua Caliente Reservation, which was established in 1896. The current name for the city came into common usage in the mid 1860s for the geographical location of a well known mineral spring. It is notable for its mid century modern architecture, which was popularized by the company Alexander Homes. The climate is that of the desert: it only averages 5.23 inches of rainfall annually, with warm winter months. The summer temperature in Palm Springs usually is around 90 degrees, with highs sometimes going up to 100 degrees or more.
The majority of the population in Palm Springs is that of the Caucasian non family; 78.33 percent of the racial makeup is Caucasian, and 53 percent were of non family type households. The population is generally spread out evenly in age groups, with the 65 and older group having a slight majority. This majority may be fueled by the tourism industry, which is the city's main source of income. The city is home to several high end hotels, restaurants, and attractions, including sights, such as the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. To find out about these hotels and resorts, it would be a good idea to consult the Palm Springs, California yellow pages or the Palm Springs, California business directory. The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway has the world's largest rotating cable cars. There is also the Spa Resort Hotel and Casino, which is run by the Cahuilla Indians. In addition, Palm Springs is home to the semipro league baseball team, the Palm Springs Power. The city also hosts the BNP Paribas Open, one of the more significant tennis events in the world, and occasionally is the home of the Easter Bowl, the national junior tennis championships.
The city's government is that of a charter city, which was adopted by voters in 1994. It has a council manager system that hires its city attorney and mayor. The school system is operated by a different entity called the Palm Springs Unified School District, and operates 38 schools and continuing education programs. Palm Springs is also home to College of the Desert.
