About Perris

Perris, California is a city located in southwest Riverside County, California. It is 80 miles southeast of Los Angeles. Perris sits northeast of San Diego. Local businesses can be found in the Perris, CA business directory. This city was named after Fred T. Perris. He was the chief engineer of the California Southern Railroad. Before the 1880's, this area was known as San Jacinto Plains. Indians were the first to live here. Then the Mexican and Spanish miners moved into the region for the gold deposits they found in the hills. People began to come here to live also for the rich soil on flat land that is in such a good climate. In the 1880's, The California Southern Railroad went through this area to connect what is now called the cities of Barstow and San Diego. Fred T. Perris was in charge of surveying the land. California Southern Railroad bought the land from Southern Pacific Railroad in order to create a town here.

The locals must have seen this as an opportunity. They agreed to build a depot, dig a well, and give a certain amount of lots to the railroad if they would in turn establish a station there. They came online as an official station in April of 1886. Freight trains and passenger trains made daily stops here. The town experienced very rapid growth. In 1911 Perris, Ca officially became a city. After many bad storms washed out the tracks over and over in the Temecula Gorge, this route that went to San Diego was closed. After the railroad closed in Perris, they turned to farming. People here started with dry grain farming until water was able to be brought into the valley in the 1950's. Then they were able to grow alfalfa, king potatoes, and sugar beets. The lake in Perris was constructed in the 1960's and 1970's. This made the area very appealing to visitors.
