Logistics is the supply and management of things such as goods, information and other resources from the point of origin to the point of consumption. The art of logistics was first used in ancient times when Greek, Roman and Byzantine soldiers needed supplies and finances managed so that they could effectively meet their military goals. Those appointed to run the logistics branch of operation were known as "Logistikas" from the Greek word "logistiki" which means accounting. Today logistics is an advanced branch of the military sciences and has practical applications not only in the armed forces, but also to business and production needs. In the military today logistics (or combat service support as it has been known) is applied pretty much any time anything or anyone has to be moved from point A to point B. A military logisticians is the one tasked with things like getting food and water to soldiers when they need it, or getting troops where they need to be when theyre needed. These types of duties are often times difficult to carry out because as with other sciences, military operations are subject to any manner of variables that were not foreseen.

More on Logistics
In the 1950s, an increased supply and demand as well as a more globalized transportation systems forced business men to think in new ways to get optimize their resource management. Business logistics was the resultant concept. Business logistics has the goal of getting things right, they want to get the right items to the right people at the right time for the right price in the right way. Factors that a worker in this field might want to consider is how to get goods for the lowest cost, how to store them for the lowest cost, and who will pay the highest price for them. When it comes to business logistics the primary focus is to ensure that every worker and machine is running at optimum efficiency, and that the quality of materials is met as well as a minimum production rate is being met. Tasks here involve replacing old machines when newer machines can do a faster, better job than the old ones. As opposed to the other two branches of logistics, here the focus isn't on transportation itself, but on streamlining processes and control of value-adding stages of development. Production logistics is an important part of customer response and efficiency. In todays world of commercial consumption and military combat, the old principals of logistics are becoming increasingly important. As time marches forward we learn new techniques and applications of old techniques and are able to make the system into a quicker more efficient process, and when it comes to logistics, isnt efficiency what its all about?
