About Presbyterian Churches

Finding a local Presbyterian church can be as easy as opening the Yellow Pages; or, just get online and type in your city and the words: local Presbyterian churches. But then you look at a list and you begin to wonder. Is the closest one the best choice? Is there a difference in how local Presbyterian churches provide for their congregations? Did you know that not all local Presbyterian churches follow the same theology? The word Presbyterian in its title does not mean that each church is the same. There are at least three different types of local Presbyterian churches. Presbyterian Church of America is a large denomination. Another large denomination is called Presbyterian Church, USA. And there is also the smaller Cumberland Presbyterian. Presbyterian Church of America is often more conservative in its views. Generally local Presbyterian churches with this affiliation will note it by its initials: PCA. It has a theology more in line with Baptist and evangelical congregations. Another typical local Presbyterian church is one affiliated with Presbyterian Church, USA. This old denomination generally has traditional services with Sunday school offered in the mornings. Other activities might include Sunday night services, Wednesday night activities and youth group gatherings. These local Presbyterian churches are usually less conservative religiously. Its views are often Calvinist and include infant Baptism. Many PC-USA churches now have women elders and even women pastors. A third type of local Presbyterian churches is called Cumberland Presbyterian. Each church could lean either toward PCA or toward USA in its theological approach. Like the other two strains of Presbyterian churches, it offers traditional services and Sunday school.
