About Turlock

The City of Turlock was founded in 1871 by a man named John Williams Mitchell. Turlock was initially a Pacific Railroad town and was going to be named after Mitchell. Mitchell, on the other hand, declined such an honor, and asked the city be named Turlough, after a county named Mayo in Ireland. The busier Turlock became, it was time for its incorporation. Turlock was incorporated in 1908. Turlock is situated between Modesto and Merced;it runs along state route 99 and 165. Turlock is 101 feet above sea level.Now, during World War II, the Japanese Internment Camps were built not only all over the country, but in the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds, in the City of Turlock. This internment camp held 3,000 plus Japanese-American citizens.In the 1960s, California State Univerity, Stanislaus opened up. With the college open up, students from Turlock and surrounding cities were able to apply to and get accepted to this new college. Along with the university, Turlock has two high schools, Turlock High and John Pitman High. John Pitman High was built in 2002, whereas Turlock High was built in 1907. The new high school, John Pitman, received the California Distinguished School Award in 2007.

There is only one school district, Turlock Unified School District. There are two other public schools in the district, which include two continuation schools. The City of Turlock also has Turlock Christian High School. The classes for this school are held in a chapel.As the 1980s rolled around, the city went through a growth boom of both business and residential. Ten years later, the housing boom in Turlock slowed down, but then began to increase once again as San Francisco saw their city see growth. The City of Turlock has their official website and The Turlock Journal Online. The journal has been serving the city since 1904.If you are coming to Turlock for any reason, it is advised to look in the Turlock, CA yellow pages or Turlock, CA business directory first. This is especially true if you are planning on attending the annual Taste of Turlock. This event happens in May. The Taste of Turlock invites guests to share in this cultural event. There are foods from all participating cultures to taste, watch square dancing, hula dancing, and listen to a variety of bands.The City of Turlock is inviting to all residents, guests, and students alike.
