About Broomfield

Broomfield lies to the north of Pikes Peak. The area was first inhabited by several Indian tribes, including the Ute, Comanche, Kiowa, Cheyenne, and Arapaho arriving in the area at least 1000 years ago. To the west of Broomfield lies the large, open plains. These Indians were hunters and followed the animals. From 1858 to 1861 the area around Broomfield saw nearly 1000 people hoping to find gold in the hills. Some of these people stayed on and began farming operations. One of the early farms in the area was owned by Adolph Zang and his father Philip Zang. The Zangs were freethinkers who operated a brewery, which was the first in Colorado. He also raised Percheron horses to pull the beer wagons. The company sold out in 1912 to a British company. At the brewery's peak, it employed 175 men and produced 140,000 barrels of alcohol each year. After selling his brewing company, Adolph brought 29 mines along nearby Cripple Creek.

Adolph was also instrumental in the creation of a life insurance company, a bank, two hotels, and an amusement park. In the 1950s, Broomfield's leaders developed a master plan for the community, which still exists today. The plan calls for the community to reach a maximum of 65,000 people. One recent problem that the city has overcome is that portions of the city laid in four different counties. This made it difficult for residents to conduct legal business, so the city council petitioned the state to create a new county, which it did in 1999, making it the smallest county in Colorado. Those needing to conduct legal business should consult the Broomfield, CO yellow pages.
