Colorado Springs, Colorado was founded by General William Palmer in 1871. The city is located about 70 miles south of Denver, along the Front Range of Colorado. The Front Range consists of the cities that lie along the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains. Other cities along the Front Range include Fort Collins, Loveland, Longmont, and Boulder, which are to the north of Denver and Pueblo, which is located south of Colorado Springs. Pikes Peak towers above Colorado Springs with an elevation of 14,115 feet. The city itself is over a mile high with an elevation of 6,035 feet. Besides its high altitude, Colorado Springs also has a large population. The population is estimated to be over 415,000, making it the second highest population of any city in Colorado. The climate of Colorado Springs is fairly mild. It is considered a semi arid climate with plenty of sunshine and an annual precipitation averaging about 17 inches.
