Greeley, Colorado is one of the fastest growing cities in the United States, according to CNN Money. Located in one of the state's most prosperous counties and offering jobs for unskilled workers, it has a robust economy. While agriculture still influences many city decisions., population and commercial growth make their needs known, too. Founded in 1870 by Nathaniel Meeker along with Robert A. Cameron and H.T. West, Greeley was a planned town rather than one that sprang up from either necessity or convenience. The founders wanted above all to attract church going, farming, educated, non-drinking men with families who would stay and create a community that was morally superior to the rowdy western towns that history has painted for us. Greeley was, at the time, one of only three towns in the United States that practiced temperance and there were so many churches that the town was known as The City of Churches. A Baptist church won $500 for building the first church in Greeley.
The town was completely fenced in at one point to keep the free ranging cattle from eating the townsfolk's gardens. Bison, or American buffalo, were abundant on the surrounding plains, too, and presented Greeley with problems as well as business opportunities, such as tanning hides and selling buffalo robes.Greeley has long outgrown its planned and pristine beginnings as shown in the Greeley, CO yellow pages. They still list church after church after church, but they also list plenty of bars and liquor stores on page after page.Of course, there's more to Greeley than churches and bars. The Greeley, Co business directory is impressive, with everything from flooring stores to boutiques, and from four star restaurants to bison ranches. New shopping centers flow out into the plains to the west, inviting people to buy and build homes farther and farther away from downtown. As the town spreads, new businesses grow even more. Each year the Greeley, Co business directory and yellow pages grow larger. With the flavor of its old west past alongside the large, new shopping centers, the atmosphere in Greeley successfully integrates the two and is invigorating, yet comfortable.
