The area where Bridgeport, CT now resides was first settled by the Pequonnock people who lent their name to the river in this area. The first school was established in 1688 and the first church in 1695. Bridgeport finally became a city in 1836. Being near the Atlantic Ocean, fishing became an important industry for Bridgeport, CT. Farming, shipbuilding, and whaling were also enterprises of note during the 19th century. During this time, the city became home to Little Liberia an area where free black people took up residence. It is so named because of its identification with the African country of Liberia, which was established for newly freed blacks. Abraham Lincoln saw fit to give a speech in Bridgeport on March 10, 1860 because he was having such great success giving talks around New England. His fortunes continued to grow in Bridgeport when he arrived at what was called Bridgeport City Hall. People who could not fit into the building to witness the speech gathered outside. The building still stands in Bridgeport under the name of McLevy Hall. Bridgeport has also been the home of highly famous people. One is P.T. Barnum who built a large estate he named Waldemere; he also constructed three other homes in the city.
