About Greenwich

Greenwich, Connecticut is located in Fairfield County and is named after the Greenwich that is located in Kent, England. Greenwich is located on the southwest side of the state. In 1665, Greenwich was declared a township of its own. After this, the town began to prosper and grow. Greenwich was very much a part of the Revolutionary War where General Putnam was well known for making his famous ride. That evening he stayed in a tavern, which is now controlled by a museum and is called Putnam's Cottage. When visiting Greenwich, you can find this listed in the local Greenwich, Ct yellow pages or the Greenwich, Ct business directory. When the railroad began construction in Greenwich in 1848, there was a big growth in population with more job opportunities being available. In 1990, there was a celebration that lasted an entire year to mark the 350th anniversary of Greenwich. Today, Greenwich is a blossoming community with nice homes, school, parks, and is enjoyed by those who live there and visitors who come to visit.

The town of Greenwich has 4 lovely beaches, which are Greenwich Point, Island Beach, Great Captain Island, and Byram Beach. Passes can be purchased for visitors and most have picnic sections as well as small marinas. There is a lovely sailing center in the parks as well as some nice paths for rollerblading or biking for visitors and residents to enjoy. There is a lovely golf course, which is named after Griff Harris, who was the first selectman in Greenwich. Calf Island is an island of 29 acres located off the shores of Greenwich and is now open for visitors and travelers. Half of the island is prohibited to visitors without a reason for a bird sanctuary. There is availability to stay overnight with permission. Another island just off the coast is Great Captain Island. This island as well has a nice bird sanctuary and a coast guard lighthouse is here. Island Beach has also been called Little Captain Island, which was always the location for the annual Island Beach Day. Children as well as adults have planned activities for a fun day of sun and water. Unfortunately, over the past few years, the beaches on Island Beach have begun to erode and the erosion continues to make the beaches slowly disappear.
