Hartford, Connecticut is the capital of the state of Connecticut. The city was originally a post for Dutch fur traders as early as 1623, but was settled more permanently by the English in 1625. The original fort built in the area was abandoned around 1654. Hartford's climate is humid and muggy, with typically cold New England winters. The annual precipitation is around 46 inches a year, with an average snowfall of around 45 inches. Temperatures can often be extreme in the summer, sometimes exceeding 90 degrees.

The population demographic is families with children, married couples, and single parents, more or less evenly divided. Racially, Caucasian, Latino, and African-American are the major races, with Caucasian being about 27 percent of the population, Latino being 40.52 percent, and African-American being 38 percent. Sixty one percent of the population of Hartford is under the age of 44, making it a young town. The median income for families is $27,051, with a per capita income of $13,428. Thirty percent of Hartford lives below the poverty line, making it the second highest in the nation as far as poverty rates are concerned. Hartford's economy is driven by the insurance industry: it is the historic international center for insurance trade. The Hartford public school system is host to the nations second oldest high school, Hartford Public High School. Also in Hartford is the American School for the Deaf, which was founded in 1817 by Thomas Gallaudet and Laurent Clerc. There are also several prestigious colleges to choose from, such as Trinity College, which is the second oldest college in Connecticut, and the University of Hartford. There are several points of interest for the tourist, including the Cathedral of St. Joseph, Bushnell Park, Colt Armory, the former home of Harriet Beecher Stowe, and the Mark Twain House.
