Meriden, Connecticut became a town in 1806. Like many towns in New England, Meriden takes its name from a British town. The town was dubbed Silver City because of the large number of silver cutlery and related objects produced there in the early 1800s. The town was also known for its production of guns before The Great Depression, when many businesses, including the gun factory, closed. One of the first FM radio broadcasts came from the Meriden hills. The town is a part of New Haven County and is home to almost sixty thousand residents.
