New Haven was nicknamed The Elm City because this city was the first in American to have a public tree planting program. New Haven, Connecticut is known for its pro Democrat stance and is the birthplace of former President George W. Bush, and the temporary home of former Presidents William Howard Taft, Gerald Ford, and Bill Clinton. It is the second largest municipality in Connecticut and the sixth largest in New England. New Haven is known for its historical landmark New Haven Green, which is located in the center of downtown New Haven. With its warm summers and frequent snowfall, this city is also known for its large harbor, and two famous reddish rocks known as East Rock and West Rock.
The West, Mill, and Quinnipiac rivers work together to drain this city. New Haven is home to one of the top Ivy League colleges, Yale University. Yale is also the largest employer in New Haven. In 1970, New Haven, Connecticut made history for holding the largest and longest Black Panther trials ever.In downtown New Haven, also known as New Haven green in a two block radius, there is a choice of over 120 restaurants to choose from. New Haven is known for its ethnic foods, including Malaysian, Ethiopian, Spanish, Latino, Thai, Chinese, Japanese, and Jamaican cuisines, just to name a few. New Haven claimed its culinary crown for the best pizza in the world. The New Haven Jazz Fest became very popular with its residents and visitors in 1982; unfortunately this event was canceled in 2007 and then revived in 2008 and 2009.
Former President Bill Clinton spoke at the opening ceremonies at the 1995 Special Olympics World Summer Games. New Haven has also been the filming location for many great movies including Steven Spielbergs 2008 Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. For your transportation needs, New Haven offers a two hour commute to New York and has the second largest transit division with 24 routes.
