About Largo

The earliest inhabitants of the Largo, Fl area were the Paleo-Indians who lived in the area between 12,000 and 15,000 BC. These Indians lived by hunting the deer, turkey, and other small game that was abundant in the area. By 750 BC, the Native Americans had organized small villages and had learned to gather food in more productive ways. They had also learned to fish. By 1500 AD the Native Americans had learned to farm and were becoming skillful at trading with other groups often exchanging freshwater pearls, conch shells, and fish bones for copper, iron ore, and seeds. As the Indians started to settle into groups the Largo area was settled by the Timucua Native Americans who grew maze, beans, and squash during the summer months rotating their crops often and hunted the still abundant wildlife of deer, turkey, and other small game during the winter months.

Their farming methods were very advanced for the time. In 1842, Captain George McKay settled in the area and built along the banks of McKay Creek. Accompanying him was his two brothers, Alex and Charles. The first commercial area was started just south of Captain McKay's home and was known as Lowe's Landing.
