About Albany

Located in the southwestern part of the state of Georgia in Dougherty County is Albany, Georgia. The city borders the Flint River.In October 1836, Nelson Tift settled in the area around the Flint River and named this town Albany. Albany became incorporated in 1838. The majority of the county was Black due to planters and their slaves settling in the area. The location was good for shipping cotton by steamboat because of the Flint River. Later in 1912, the first Post Office and a courthouse were opened. Construction began in 1941 for a U.S. Army Air Corps training base in Albany. After WWII, the airfield was closed, but reopened again in 1947. Over the years, Albany has expanded considerably in population and is still known to be a nice, Southern town. The land is full of pecan groves and still has many farms and plantations. The Marine Corps base as well as education and health care are the biggest sources of income and employment in Albany. Transportation and retail are also great sources of income for the town.

Albany is home of the Civil Rights Movement Museum, which is in a restored church that was restored from 1906. A visit to the Albany Bus Station is a must. Back in the early days, the bus station was made into a restaurant and was off limits to African Americans. Today, the bus station is owned by an African American man and actually provides service to five surrounding counties.
