East Point, Georgia is located in Fulton County and lies just south of the capital, Atlanta, Georgia. The city was originally named East Point as it was the opposite side of Atlanta and West Point Railroad. The railroad ended in the east; at West Point, it ended in the west, so the name East and Point were put together to come up with East Point. When East Point first began, there were only 16 families living there, but as the industry grew so did the population. With a railroad, gristmills, and a distillery, it became a much more popular place to live. By 1880, the city had its first school, sawmill, post office, newspaper office, and two churches. With the climate being so nice and the relationship of its location to the railroad, East Point became a popular summer spot to visit. The telephone came in 1884, the first charter in 1887 and finally the housing market exploded in the 1890s. During the 1890s, a big part of property in East point was beginning to develop and more homes, businesses and churches were allowing for more places to live and be employed.
