About East Point

East Point, Georgia is located in Fulton County and lies just south of the capital, Atlanta, Georgia. The city was originally named East Point as it was the opposite side of Atlanta and West Point Railroad. The railroad ended in the east; at West Point, it ended in the west, so the name East and Point were put together to come up with East Point. When East Point first began, there were only 16 families living there, but as the industry grew so did the population. With a railroad, gristmills, and a distillery, it became a much more popular place to live. By 1880, the city had its first school, sawmill, post office, newspaper office, and two churches. With the climate being so nice and the relationship of its location to the railroad, East Point became a popular summer spot to visit. The telephone came in 1884, the first charter in 1887 and finally the housing market exploded in the 1890s. During the 1890s, a big part of property in East point was beginning to develop and more homes, businesses and churches were allowing for more places to live and be employed.

As the East Point, GA yellow pages and East Point, GA business directory will show you, there is a lot of new resurgence in businesses and more places to go and things to do in East Point. There was an addition of a new shopping place called the Camp Creek Marketplace, which has given more opportunity for growth in the cities western location. Many of the older and ancient World War II homes have recently been purchased for remodeling in the Jefferson Park area. As well a recently new multiplex has opened up in the Camp Creek area of East Point in late 2007.East Point has always been well known for its involvement in the community in relation to youth, young adult, and adult sports. They are home to seven different parks and recreation centers. Many athletes have come out of the city of East Point to become quite famous, such as Reggie Rutland and Jonas Jennings from the NFL, Donald Adams and Bill Thorn from basketball, and John Milner from baseball.
