About Des Moines

The name Fort Des Moines lasted until the city was incorporated in 1851. At that time the name was shortened to Des Moines. The capital of the state of Iowa and the county seat of Polk County, Des Moines is a major hub for the insurance industry. All of the major insurance companies can be found in the Des Moines, Iowa business directory. Also listed in the Des Moines, Iowa business directory are all the major employers of the city. Being that the state of Iowa is near the center of the United States and far removed from water, the climate of Des Moines is characterized by fair to cold springs, hot, humid summers, colorful, leaf turning autumns, and cold, snowy winters.

In presidential politics, Des Moines is the home of the Iowa caucuses which is the first event in nominating a future United States president. Des Moines boasts of its own playhouse that entertains the visitors and locals alike with live theater and performance art. The city also proudly displays its own symphony, botanical center, zoo and theme park, all of which can be found in the Des Moines, Iowa yellow pages. Restaurants from high class dining to quaint mom and pop places can also be found in the Des Moines, Iowa yellow pages.

When Fort Des Moines was built it was the Sauk and Meskawki Indians that raised the walls of the city under the supervision of Captain James Allen. Although the name Fort Raccoon was bandied about, the United States war department settled on Fort Des Moines. During the first World War, Fort Des Moines was a provisional training regiment that housed African Americans who went on to graduate as captains or lieutenants. When the second World War arrived, Fort Des Moines not only hosted, but approved of the formation of the very first Womens Army Auxiliary Corps or the WAACs. The WAAC was eventually renamed and became the WACs or the Womens Army Corps. The archeological finds, deep history, turning seasons, and scheduled events for the city make Des Moines, Iowa one of the most sought after places to live in the United States.
