The town of Arlington Heights, Illinois is a suburban area located near Chicago, Illinois. It resides in Cook County and has a population of 76,301 as of the year 2000. A popular activity that many residents enjoy is horse racing. The performing arts center attracts many people each year. Many restaurants are located in the downtown area. John Klehm was an early farmer in the area and grew mainly potatoes. As a main supplier for the Chicago market he began a nursery for cherry, apple, and pear trees. In the 1850s, truck farms carried dairy products and vegetables into Chicago. The town was incorporated as Arlington Heights in 1887.Horse racing became a popular event in the area in 1927. After the second world war, there were many farms and greenhouses. During the 1950s, a population increase occurred with the rise of the automobile industry. Together with the rise in Chicago's economy, most of the available land in the area had been taken up.

There are plans to build an additional rail station on the south edge of the city. Interstate 90 and Illinois 53 run along the south and western edges of town. They provide easy access to the main airport and to the city of Chicago. Arlington Heights road is a main street, which runs north and south through the entire city.
