More on Nursing Homes

The environment of the local nursing homes you evaluate should also be considered? Are they located in a residential neighborhood? Is it close to your work or home? Is the construction new or updated and does its environment seem conducive to well being? Does it feel like a home? What about safety features such as wheelchair accessibility, non-skid floors, and safety bars in the bathroom? Are the local nursing homes equipped with doors alarms? Are there smoke detectors or fire sprinkler systems? Are they regularly inspected? What about landscaping? Are there pleasant sitting and garden areas? Or walking paths for those who are mobile? Some other options to consider amongst local nursing homes are: Can a specific diet be provided if ordered by a physician? What about housekeeping services? Are they included? Is transportation available for your loved one to get to medical appointments? Are the residents monitored 24 hours a day and by qualified personnel? Do residents have access to beauty services? How do the residents receive prescriptions? Does a pharmacy deliver? Perhaps one of the best ways to choose from local nursing homes is to make an unannounced visit. Do they welcome your visit and give a complimentary meal or tour? Are you surprised at the gracious atmosphere you encounter or do you feel rejected? After all, this is supposed to be a home for you and your loved one. If you feel welcomed and comfortable than odds are that your loved one will too.
