Some used car dealers attend public or private auctions for repossessed vehicles or police impounds. These cars tend to be in fairly good shape, so they don't require much presale refurbishing. Others accept vehicle trade-ins wherein customers exchange their used cars for one of the sellers models. All of these practices saves the customer a lot of money but still allows the seller to make a profit.

Your best bet is to have a mechanic examine the car before you buy it, but this isnt always possible and not all dealers will allow it. Getting a title search done gives you a more accurate picture of the vehicles condition and should be conducted whenever possible. Additionally, always get a warranty if one is available to you.
