About Elmhurst

The town of Elmhurst in Illinois was first settled around 1836. However it was first officially named Cottage Hill in 1845 when they built the post office there. In the beginning it was a vast land filled with green grass and plenty of trees and the Salt Creek ran nearby providing fresh water. It wasn't until 1869 that the name was officially changed to Elmhurst. It was officially incorporated as a village in 1882 at which time its population was registered at approximately 1,050 residents. Since that time, the town has continued to grow and evolve as has many towns in the United States. In the period from 1920 to 1930 the town tripled in size.Today the city is home to Elmhurst College, which is a four year independent school for the arts. This hospital was first established in 1926 as the very first hospital in DuPont County.
