About Schaumburg

The city of Schaumburg, Illinois is a suburban city located near Chicago, Illinois. It resides in Cook County and has a population of 75,386. It is served by O'Hare International Airport. The town has an amphitheater and an arts center. It has many restaurants and retail stores that can be found in the Schaumburg, IL yellow pages.Schaumburg is named after the German county of Grafschaf Shaumburg. Much of the area was inhabited by Native Americans preceding the arrival of German settlers. It was officially incorporated into a town on March 7th, 1956. Most of Schaumburg was primarily German owned until the great depression of the 1930s. During this time many German owned farms went into foreclosure. The farms were later purchased by people of non German descent and by companies. The German heritage has stayed in Schaumburg throughout the years. German was the first language of many of the residents until the 1950s. The area was originally known as Sarah's Grove. The name comes from a grove of woods that runs through the northwest portion of the city. It is named after three young women whose families lived near the grove. Sarah McChesney, Sarah Frisbe, and Sarah Smith. It was in the year 1850 that the town was named Shaumburg during a town meeting by Friedrich Heinrich Nerge.

In Schaumburg's early days, the town's main occupation was farming. Potato growing, dairy, and cattle products were the main sources of income. The land was a large meadow that was surrounded by wilderness. Many forms of wildlife existed here, such as geese, pheasants, and deer. In the middle of the 18th century, a small market developed at the intersection of what is now Schaumburg and Roselle roads. Stores that were included were two general stores, a cheese factory, and a blacksmith.During the 1950s there was a large amount of growth in Cook County. O'Hare International Airport was built nearby in what was previously known as O'Hare field. A large technical and business workforce developed in the area. In the 1970s, interstate 290 was opened, which provided a new link to Chicago. This gave Schaumburg more stature in the region. For the rest of the decade there was a large growth in commercial, industry, and residential development. Schaumburg is presently home to many businesses in the technical and customer service industries. They can be located in the Schaumburg, IL business directory.
