About Community & Government
Local Army and Navy surplus stores may seem a little odd at first, but they are filled with useful items as well as some entertainment driven merchandise. These retail establishments carry a wide assortment of Government Issue products such as military fatigues, dog tags, dress uniforms, flight suits, metals and patches, boots, tactical equipment, eye wear/goggles, law enforcement utensils, helmets, berets and other headgear, and memorabilia. They also sell camping gear, knives, tools, flags, self-defense stuff, lighters, flashlights, binoculars, ropes, rain gear, clothing, watches, flasks, books, training DVDs, and assorted novelty items/gifts. Survival kits are another item most local surplus stores keep in stock. These are perfect for earthquakes, fires, floods, or any natural disaster/ emergency situation. Most survival sets include small first aid kits, but it is probably a good idea to buy these separately because larger ones contain more useful items that may not be included in pocket sized versions. Army and Navy stores usually have lower prices than sporting goods stores because they operate in a manner similar to that of wholesalers. They typically purchase items in bulk from the government and work wear manufacturers such as Dickies. Military relics and other items for collectors cannot be bought in bulk, though, so they are not available at reduced rates.

More on Army - Navy Stores
Your local Army and Navy surplus store might be a safer bet than E Bay because you can physically inspect their items before you buy. You should probably try to find clothing and boots in your local store to ensure that they fit properly. Obviously, sizing is not a concern for blankets, flags, or knives. Local surplus stores also serve a social function. They are a place where veterans, collectors, and military buffs tend to congregate, so you will probably find like minded individuals there. This opens up the possibility of forming new friendships or joining political clubs in your area. Lots of local surplus stores are involved in community safety programs such as neighborhood watch groups. They might have information for you about similar organizations in your neighborhood. Your local surplus store may also be affiliated with the NRA chapter in your area along with lesser known Second Amendment rights and veterans associations. If you are interested in visiting a shooting range or taking self defense/martial arts classes, your local Army and Navy surplus store will probably be able to make a recommendation to get you started. They often participate in military and gun shows, so be sure to ask about any exciting upcoming events.
