About Manhattan

Situated among the state's Flint Hill region, Manhattan, KS calls itself home to the Kansas State Wildcats and borders the nearby Army reservation of Fort Riley. In fact, many of the city's residents are active duty soldiers who commute daily to and from the military base. The population also consists of college students who attend K-State or Manhattan Christian College. K-State's athletic teams have gathered national recognition. In fact, its football team, coached by Bill Schneider, has won national championships. Most recently, its men's basketball team played in the NCAA men's Division I tournament and enjoyed being nationally ranked and followed throughout much of the basketball season.In addition to its Wildcat moniker, Manhattan also calls itself the Little Apple, which is a take on New York City's nickname the Big Apple. Indeed, Manhattan's economy continues to be strong, with commerce being gained from such companies as Florence Corporation and Manko Windows. The local school district, including Manhattan High School, also provides the local economy with jobs and revenue. Additionally, many residents work at Kansas State University or at Fort Riley as civilian employees.

Being in its geographical location, Manhattan experiences a four season year. Winters are often windy and cold, with temperatures often falling into the subzero range. The city receives about a foot of snow annually. Summers are hot, windy, and dry. In fact, temperatures often climb into the upper 90s or lower 100s. Rain falls most frequently in mid to early spring. The Flint Hills region of the state often witnesses spring and summer tornadoes, with the most recent occurring in June 2008. A great portion of the city's west area was destroyed, including property damage being observed at K-State's residence halls. Car dealerships, tractor parts stores, and other prominent businesses were wiped out and had to be rebuilt.Even with its range of weather, Manhattan residents enjoy the many activities offered in the city. Such locations include Kanza Prairie hiking trail, the Sunset Zoo, and its many animals, Tuttle Creek, Colbert Hills Golf Course, or the dairy at K-State's student union.
