An Indian village of the Shawsheen tribe occupied the space that is Billerica now, back in the early 1630s. In 1655, residents voted to name the land Billerica, and this is said to be because the majority of families in the settlement originated from Billericay, which is in England. Billerica's oldest homestead , that still remains is Manning Manse. Asa Pollard was a resident of Billerica, and he was the first soldier killed at the battle of Bunker Hill, back in 1775.
