The city of Brockton, is in the county of Plymouth in Massachusetts. Brockton is one of the county seats in Plymouth County and is the sixth of the largest cities, also called the City of Champions because of the many successful boxers who lived there. Rocky Marciano and Marvin Hagler were both from the city of Brockton. Brockton was the first place in the world to have the underground electrical system in 1883. In 1894, the first theater in the world with that electrical system was opened up, also known as The City Theater. Brockton operated its first fire station in 1884. An interesting fact about Brockton was that in November of 2010, they set the world record for the most people wearing Santa hats at an event at one time with 872 participants all wearing the Santa hat!
Brockton was named after Isaac Brock, who was a local merchant. In 1881, Brockton became a city after being a town for years. Brockton was the biggest producer of shows in the Civil War days and still after the 20th century, Brockton was well known for its shoe and leather items in the industry.As the Brockton, MA yellow pages and the Brockton, MA business directory will show you, there are many historical sites to see in Brockton as well as many fun places and points of interest. There are many museums that one can visit such as the Brockton Fire Museum, as well as many old historical houses and areas to visit. Brockton has also been named one of the 100 Best Communities for Young People in the United States. They were voted for this in 2005, 2008, and 2010 again. This lavish award is decided on by the American's Promise Alliance, who recognizes the communities that take action to lower the dropout numbers of children and to those communities that offer support for their youth. Through all the challenges that Brockton has faced, it has still worked hard to put youth success on the top of the list and is noted for their commitment to mentoring the youth in the community.
