As long as there has been electricity there have been electrical supply companies. The products that they sold were very primitive by today's standards, yet they served the purpose for the end user known as the electrician. As time evolved, in the electric supply companies, there has been an undertone of muttering from the seasoned electrical salesmen that the present business times are not as good as the old days. In the good old days the wholesale manufacturers were strictly in the business to support and supply the electric supply companies and by the same token the electric supply companies were in the business of servicing their client with the most up to date and the most competitively priced product. There is nothing about this that is any more different than any other fine upstanding business. Yet as the electric supply companies grew with the need to build more buildings and homes and factories were at full throttle and schools were being built everything in the electrical supply community was status quo; there was enough for everyone. Those were the good old days. Times became tough in the electric supply industry and the business took a downward turn in the 70's, in the 80's, in the 90's and now in 2009. With each twist in the economy the local supply companies have felt the wrenching tightness of downward spiraling net sales. Gone are the days when the local electrical supply company played in their own sand box. It more or less turned to the grass is greener in the other electrical supply company's territory. As the desire grew more tempting to see what they could achieve by infiltrating another electrical supply companies business the word competition was no longer a tamed benefit for the local electrical supply company or for that matter it was not any better for the wholesale manufacturers. The concept of taking sides came into play during these years between contractors, the local electric supply companies, and wholesale manufacturers.

It had come down to who can give the most behind the scenes. The concept of relationship building became the new buzz word, sort of along the lines of allies on the Survivor TV show. Who can do the best entertainment which included sporting events, expensive dinners, cruises and oh, yes, the occasional baseball cap? It was best to be able to say that one had the biggest contractor on their side, for the local electrical supplier. It was best to be able to say for the wholesale manufacturer that they had the largest local electrical supplier in their back pocket. The whole time that the expenses of multidimensional entertainment has occurred, the heated level of competition driving down the gross margin dollars and the increased amount of going over to the greener pastures has changed the face for the local electrical supply company and the wholesale manufacturers. Gone are the days business was conducted with a hand shake. Where are those good old days when you need them?
