This will help to reduce the risk of injury and muscle fatigue. There is a rubber-floored area in every skating rink where you can walk in your skates without causing damage to the blades or to the floor. More on Ice Skating Rinks - Instruction

One of the most suggested warm up and stretching exercises is knee bends. Start with shallow knee bends and then progress to deeper knee bends. Do these until you feel limber and flexible. Your legs may be the most important but do not forget your other muscle groups. Once you have your balance and stretching, you are ready to hit the ice. You will most likely actually hit the ice by falling at least once. Do not let this discourage you; everyone falls regardless of how much experience they have. Many people think that they will not be able to skate and are surprised at how easy it is to move around the ice. Obviously, the advanced Olympic style figure skating takes years of lessons and practice but to have a fun time on the ice is attainable for almost anyone. If you know a more advanced skater, you may hold onto their arm or hand to aid in keeping your balance. Most rinks allow this but you should check the rules. If you enjoy your first skating session, you may want to take a few lessons to advance your skill level. The best way to find out about lessons is to inquire at the skating rink. Most will have a wide variety of options available from private lessons with a tutor to group classes of all skill levels. Just a few tips and tricks will advance you ability a great deal. Each improvement will lead to more confidence and to more fun on the ice.
