About Media & Communications
The telecommunications industry has made incredible strides during its many years in existence. From those heavy steel-based phones with the rotary dials to small, lightweight communications devices that people these days cannot seem to live without. The evolution of telecom services has advanced so dramatically that those older devices have fallen by the wayside. Portable telecommunication equipment is so prevalent in modern society that even the pay-telephones that many of us grew up with are quickly becoming ghosts of the past. As people began to rely on their cell phones, many of them decided that they didnt need two telephone bills so they did away with their home phones switching to cell phone use exclusively. The cellular companies exploited this phase and began making offerings that would enhance cell phone usage. But it became increasingly clear that even though users could keep a calendar, add alarms, surf the internet, play games and even get driving directions via their cell phones the cost of using these enhancements caused cellular phone bills to skyrocket and home phones are slowly beginning to make a comeback. Competition between providers of local Voice over Internet Protocol equipment and services has heated up recently with claims of being less expensive and more flexible than their competition. Although VoIP services have been available for many years now, the public at large was not really aware of VoIP or what it could do until recently. Even though calls are channeled through the internet, it is not necessary to own a computer to use VoIP services.

More on Voice Over Internet Protocol Equipment - Services
There are literally hundreds of companies which can easily be found on the internet that provide VoIP services. As of January 2008, there were more than 1,400 VoIP services available for small business and residential use. There are broadband service providers available that have free VoIP services which are comparable to the pay offerings. One such company, well known for its search engine, has recently ventured into the area of VoIP and like most of their other offerings the Voice over Internet Protocol service is free. All phone system services are not created equally though. The options available can differ vastly from one service to another. If you conduct business overseas you will want to make sure that you have an international calling option available to you and that the charges are at the very least, competitive. When selecting your VoIP service, you have the option of choosing the area code you wish to use. If you want to establish a business presence in another city, you will be able to select a local area code for that city and have the calls ring on your cell, home or office phone. Whatever service provider you select, certain equipment will be required to use it effectively. If you want to make calls directly from your computer, you will need a headset with microphone. If you have internet access through your cell phone carrier, you will be able to make calls using VoIP directly from your cell phone.
