About Radio Stations

Todays local radio stations have something for everyone, and indeed, this is true; from rap to rock-and-roll, and everything in between, though, truth be told, I wouldn't have the foggiest where to put rap, but there are few suggestions. First, just a little background. Growing up on the north side of Chicago in the late 50s, and early 60s,loving to watch TV and movies like anyone else, but the gang of people around with, were accused, on ocassion, of having a nine transisitor radio surgically attached to our ears, listening to the local radio stations. We listened to the Top 40, constantly, day and night, and to DJs that were truly DJs, in those days. These guys were funny and witty, without overdoing it, unlike some today, which try too hard, and fail anyway. The DJs during this time actually had radio "shows," meaning real funny stuff and the music. Commercials? Of course, which they placed in between the tunes, not the other way around. Female personalities on the radio are more likeable more than the males because the ladies don't try so hard to be witty like the guys do, and just seem to go-with-the flow. Just a personal observation, or is that an "earservation?"

More on Radio Stations

Now having said all that, at the risk of you thinking its biased or caught up in nostalgia (okay, maybe a little), we do enjoy some things from today's local radio stations. These days, you can almost count on the entire song being played, even what we used to call the "long versions." Do you remember how much you loved "Light My Fire" by The Doors; short version, about three minutes and change; long version, six minutes plus. Not only did they hardly ever play the long version, but they always managed to talk over the beginning and cut off the ending. Talking over the bass and guitar intro to The Byrds' "Eight Miles High," should have been tantamount to a felony! The other thing had to do with calling into a local radio station. Can you imagine trying to get through to an overloaded number on a rotary dial telephone? You will actually entered and exited puberty while waiting and trying to get through to a local station, either for a song request or a contest, or heaven forbid, tickets to a concert. Now local FM radio stations back then, were truly where the phrase elevator music must have been born as well as many kinds of classical music. Still to this day, can't identify what that was then, but may it rest in peace. The reception was always bad anyway, not like the fifty-thousand watts of AM signal. Its a different story today; FM reception and sound is pretty good, and when you listen to that cool percussion, it actually sounds like percussion, and not like someone beating on a steel garbage can. We still love radio, and always will. It played a major part in my coming of age and rites of passage, and, as nostalgic and corny as it may sound, it was as good a friend or better, than all the ones we had.
