About Portland

Portland, Maine was colonized in the 1600s, its access to the water made it a desirable shipping community. The town was very prosperous until the Revolutionary War when the town lost its trade and was bombed by the British. It was not until 1786 that the town became the city of Portland and in 1820, Maine finally became a state. Portland was the capital of Maine until it changed to Augusta in 1832. The city of Maine has survived four fires in its history, one of which was devastating in its destruction.
