About Battle Creek

Batttle Creek is a city in Calhoun County, Michigan. It is located where the Battle Creek and Kalamazoo Rivers come together. Area businesses can be found in the Battle Creek, MI business directory. The name Battle Creek comes from a fight between a survey party and two Indians. Colonel John Mullett was the head of the party. They surveyed this area in 1823 and 1824. Two Indians trying to steal their provisions attacked two men left in their camp. One Indian was injured when shots were fired. Because of this fight the stream was named Battle Creek River. The first settlers to the area came in 1831. In 1832, the post office opened and was run by Postmaster Pollodore Hudson. In 1833, the first school was started. By 1837 a sawmill was running. Battle Creek was home to brick manufacturing from 1840 to 1903. There used to be a Battle Creek city and a Battle Creek township. In 1982, it was voted on to bring them together as one big city.

This was prompted by threats from the Kellogg Company that they would leave Battle Creek. Today Battle Creek is Michigan's third biggest city. Battle Creek is home to the world headquarters of the Kellogg Company. Dr. John Harvey Kellogg came up with the idea of cold cereal to replace the typical breakfast of that time. He worked in the Battle Creek Sanitarium as director. Today it is the Battle Creek Federal Center. It is considered one of Michigan's historical buildings. In 1906 Will Kieth Kellogg founded the Kellogg Company. Post Cereal is also out of Battle Creek. This is why it is called Cereal City. Battle Creek has many festivals throughout the year. The World's Longest Breakfast Table is a cereal festival held each June. They really do set up a long breakfast table in the streets. The Battle Creek Field of Flight Entertainment Festival is an air show they have each year. It also includes hot air balloons. At Christmas time they have the International Festival of Lights. Huge lighting displays are set up through out the city. For more information check the Battle Creek, MI yellow pages.
