Canton, MI is located in the very heart of the south eastern Michigan. Canton was born in the mid 1800s in a 6 square mile area. The name was derived from a city in China. Farming was the main source of income for the town's people in the 1800s, which provided the necessary food and products for families. Food was preserved from large chunks of ice from the frozen rivers in winter and kept year round. Soon there after in the early 1900s Canton, MI was deemed the Sweet Corn Capitol of Michigan. They still thrive upholding that name today. Harvesting fresh spring maple sugar from sweet maple trees and dairy farming were also major abundances in Canton. Today, Canton still thrives with its now 36 mile square foot town. Farming holding its importance and goods are offered at the weekly farmers market. It continues to be governed by the hard working board of trustees still making schools, families, business, and the community the top priorities.
