About Midland

Midland, MI is located near the middle of the thumb of the state. Midland has changed from an Indian settlement to what is now known as the City of Science and Culture. Visiting the city in the 1850s, you would have found Chippewa Indians residing along the banks of the river there. The acres that the Indians lived on and farmed during that time is now called the Chippewa Nature Center. Originally this was a 6000 acre area that was deed to the Indians under the Treaty of Saginaw in 1819. After the Indians came farmers and fur-traders. Saginaw Valley was home to several sawmills, the second largest of which was found in Midland, MI. The County was organized in 1850. Railroads began to expand the area through the 1880s; the town of Midland was incorporated in 1887.Herbert Dow came to Midland in the 1890s and eventually founded the Dow Chemical Company there. Today, Dow Chemical still operates from this location as well as many others around the world. Midland, MI is home to several colleges including Delta, Northwood University, Davenport College, Saginaw Valley State, and Central Michigan University.
