Known as "P-town" or "the P" by locals, this city is ultimately known as Petoskey. A city located in the state of Michigan, with a population of about 6,080 people. This city has an area of 5.2 square miles, and the 0.2 miles is water. The location of this city is in Northern Michigan, and Southeast of the Little Traverse Bay of the well known lake Michigan. Petoskey is basically a hill filled city, and has its own waterfall.
The city widely known now as Petoskey, was first found by the Odawa Indians, That named the city got its name Petoskey, because Chief Ignatius Petosega, had Blood of the Odawa Indians from his mother's side ,found the city and named it Petoskey because it means "Where the light shines through the clouds," in Odawa language. Chief Petosega also found the first Petoskey stone which is the state stone of Michigan. Petoskey's, are stones that are both a rock and a fossil, that is shaped like a pebble, and these rocks are formed by a fossilized coral, and The stones take form because of something called glaciations. Glaciations are sheets of ice that get pulled from the stones from the bedrock stones, bedrock is the bottom rock, and the stones work their way down to Michigan's lower peninsula area, around Petoskey.
Today the city of Petoskey has four Major highways, that help Gain access to the city, and is also a Passing way to get to other parts of the state of Michigan. The four main highways start off with US Route 31, or better known as US-31 and this is a major highway, that runs through the middle Petoskey, It runs all the way to a few cities like Traverse City, Muskegon, Charlevoix, all the way to Mackinaw City. The second highway is The US Route 131 which is better known as US-131 and this highway takes travelers to the cities of Cadillac and Grand Rapids. The third highway is Michigan highway 119, better known as M-119, you get to this highway off US 31 east of the city Bay View, and the highway continues all the way to the north side of Little Traverse Bay, and takes travelers all the way to Harbor Springs and leads to a city named Cross Village. The last major highway is Called Michigan County Highway 58, better known as C-58, this highway begins at C-81 east of the city and leads to a city named Wolverine.
