About Waterford

Waterford, MI is located in Oakland County. It is commonly referred to as the Charter Township of Waterford, although it is one of the larger towns in the county. Understanding the history of Waterford will require a look back in time to the period when the settlers were just beginning to discover the natural resources and beauty available in Michigan. Waterford became a township in 1834, even before Michigan was an actual state. As home to two Indian Nations, which were the Algonquins and the Iroquois, Michigan was slow to be settled by the new people of the land. Reports had been filed that the land was useless and barren. So, as veterans were granted land parcels to settle, they were sent to the areas that are now Ohio and Illinois instead.

By the end of 1818, there was a land office established in what is now Detroit. Land parcels were sold from that office. It was during the 1830s that settlers traveled to Michigan and discovered that the land was not barren at all. Land purchases were made by Alpheus Williams and Archibald Phillips, which is now the Township of Waterford. Today many areas are available for visiting tourists to view a history of the village. In addition to historical monuments, there are many different areas where people can visit and see part of the past combined with parts of today. The Waterford, MI business directory can provide listings for various museums, shopping centers, art galleries, and much more. In addition the Waterford, MI Yellow Pages will be helpful in finding just what you may be looking for. Many events also take place in and around Waterford. Some are intended to celebrate the past while others are set up for current day activities. It is a great family tour to visit the Historical Waterford Village, which contains many options including shopping and viewing the way things were done in the early days. As Waterford continues to grow, many more people are becoming interested in the past and working to preserve what is left in order to educate tomorrow's children.
