This Center also hosted the 2008 Republican National Convention in September 2008. During the winter, over 350,000 people visit the Saint Paul Winter Carnival. This event was started when one New York reporter dubbed the town another Siberia. Attendees enjoy ice sculpting, an annual treasure hunt, winter foods, an Ice Palace, and other exciting activities. For the rest of the year, the Como Zoo and Conservatory and the Japanese Garden are main attractions. The city includes other recreational landmarks such as Lake Como, Lake Phalen, Rice Park, Highland Park, and the Wabasha Street Caves.
Some mentionable people from this town include "Peanuts" cartoonist, Charles M Schulz. His cartoon "Snoopy" inspired giant "Peanuts" sculptures all around the city. Playwright August Wilson is also from this inspiring town. The renowned painter LeRoy Neiman and photographer John Vachon also resided in this town in the early parts of their lives.
