About Cape Girardeau

Situated towards the southeastern corner of Missouri is a small city known as Cape Girardeau. With a comfortable climate that has warm summers and mild winters, Cape Girardeau is home to about 40,000 residents. Unlike several counties in Missouri, Cape Girardeau is not the county seat, despite being the largest city. It is however considered as part of the Cape Girardeau-Jackson Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The local economy of Cape Girardeau is based on farming, as is most of Southeastern Missouri. The city itself was originally established as a trading post in the late 1700s and early 1800s. Its close position on the Mississippi enabled the new city to grow and serve as a river port. Cape Girardeau also hosts a state college and two medical centers, which provide jobs for many local residents. Local stores and businesses can most likely be found in the Cape Girardeau, Missouri business directory. Entertainment-wise, Cape Girardeau offers wholesome and quiet entertainment. Several restaurants are present in the city, with diverse offerings such as Cajun, BBQ grilling, Frozen Custard, and Italian food. Common fast food restaurants are also present. Few nightclubs or lounges are open in the city, though several stores do offer videos, DVDs, and games for rent or sale.

Politically, the city and county as a whole leans center right, and is considered a Republican "stronghold." The last two presidential election results both went to the Republican candidate, with most of the politicians receiving over 50-55% of the vote. Cape Girardeau has a city government based on the Council and Manager, with the Mayor and Council setting policy and by-laws, while the Manager handles the day-to-day situations in the city. Like other cities in Missouri, Cape Girardeau provides public services in the form of police, fire responders, library, etc. Contact information for these offices can be found in the Cape Girardeau, Missouri yellow pages. The quiet city of Cape Girardeau offers a safe environment for those who call this city home. As a farming community, the city offers little for party-goers or those seeking the fast life. For those who love peace and quiet, Cape Girardeau could be the place to live.
