About Computer
Chances are you have heard the term computer software countless times without bothering to figure out what it means exactly. Computer software is data that basically lets a computer know what you want it to do. Software is different than computer hardware because those are the machines that actually make up a computer; in other words, you can touch hardware with your hands, whereas you cannot do so with software. Examples of software include your operating system, word processing program, and programming tools. Everyone who owns a computer uses software, whether they are personal users or affiliated with a business. There are literally tons of software products, which typically fall under the following categories: anti-virus protection, web development, business management, applications, education, reference, finance/accounting, photo and video, graphics, operating systems, gaming, music, and mitigation. These are not the only categories of computer software, but they are the most widespread. Clearly, without computer software, most people would not be able to make use of their computers.

More on Computer Software
Consumers can purchase all types of computer software in numerous retail establishments and on-line. Local Department stores such as Wal-Mart and Target have computer software, but their selections are relatively limited. Consumer electronics stores, Best Buy for example, have a wider selection than department stores, but they focus more on entertainment driven software than anything else. They do have some practical items such as operating systems, anti-virus software, and word processing programs. For business software, local office supply stores like Staples, CompUSA, and Office Depot cater to companies and their specific needs. There are special software programs designed for small businesses and larger ones. Computer software can also be bought directly from Dell computers, Apple, and smaller non-franchise retailers. These companies sell software for amusement and professional uses. Additionally, there are companies that build custom computer software, but this local service is not necessary for the majority of consumers. These companies often work in particular niche industries such as law enforcement or accounting. Some software programs can be downloaded for free or at least, on a no cost trial basis. Trials are good for sampling different products temporarily. It is quite common for people to download anti-virus software in order to test its effectiveness before buying from a local merchant. Free computer software does not have a very good reputation and inexperienced users should be wary of contracting a virus this way. No one should download programs unless they know where they are coming from as even highly knowledgeable computer techs contract viruses via downloads.
