About Card Shops

Local card shops are the place to go for greeting cards, discount cards, trading cards, and gift items. Card stores are located in shopping malls or in their own building. Greeting cards have been in existence for hundreds of years. A Valentines Day card from the 1400s is on display at the British Museum in London. Valentine's and Christmas cards were very popular in the 1840s. By the early 1900s, greeting cards for St. Patricks Day, Easter, Halloween, and Thanksgiving were gaining popularity. By the 1980s, card stores were becoming abundant and started offering gift wrap and gifts as well. The greeting cards industry has grown into a billion dollar industry. Greeting cards can be found to fit any occasion. Birthday, baby, baptism, graduation, engagement, wedding, anniversary, congratulations, sympathy, get well, retirement, divorce, thank you, and cards for every holiday are featured. Local card shops also offer a variety of candles, gifts, ribbons, wrapping paper, stuffed animals, figurines, calendars, guest books, wedding items, stationery, jewelry, Christmas ornaments, and books. Discount cards can be found at local card shops and department stores. Often these discount cards are 25%, 50%, or even 75% less than the original price. These discount cards are the same cards that are sold at the local card shops at full price. Another type of local card store is one that sells and trades collectible cards also known as trading cards. Sometimes greeting cards shops will sell trading cards, but most are dealt with through specialty trading cards stores. There are sports and non-sports trading cards. A thousand years ago, small cards were issued that advertised products and services. In the early 1900s, sports cards of various sizes were included with tobacco, bubblegum, and snack products. By 1936, all the cards became one size and were sold on their own without a product. Sports cards feature an athlete's photo on one side and statistics and information on the other side. Sports cards are sold in sets or individually.

More on Card Shops

Sports trading cards feature athletes from football, baseball, basketball, boxing, golf, hockey, racing, tennis, and fighting. The most valuable of sports cards are rookie cards, autographed cards, and memorabilia cards. Trading cards are licensed and serial numbered. The most valuable are those cards with lower numbers and in mint condition. Sports card collecting and trading is more popular in the United States than in any other country in the world. Non-sports trading cards depict cartoon, comic book, television series, and movie characters. Some of the trading cards available include Pokemon, Yugi-Oh, Drazonball Z, Harry Potter, Hulk, Spiderman, Simpsons, Indiana Jones, and Star Trek. Trading cards depicting presidents, cars, and motorcycles are also popular. Visiting the local card shops offers something for everyone. Any special occasion can be commemorated with a special greeting card or gift. A collector may be searching for that certain trading card to invest in his or her future. Local card stores stock a large assortment of merchandise for every man, woman, or child of any age.
