It is named after the famous mining engineer Philip Deideshemier, as he was the one who designed and supervised the construction of the ore smelter around which the town originally formed. If you look in the Philipsburg, MT Business Directory, you will find the oldest continually operating theatre in the State of Montana, the historic Opera House Theatre, which was established in 1891.
The Philipsburg, MT Yellow Pages will show you that the town lies on the 63-mile long Pintler Scenic Loop. Scenic as right was you gaze each direction to view the Sapphire Mountains to the west, the Flint Range to the east, and the Pintler Mountain Range to the south. With its rich history as a mining community during the 1800's, the authentic and beautifully restored architecture and the scenic view, Philipsburg was voted as Montana's 1998 Tourism Community of the Year.
