Red Lodge is a city in, and the county seat of, Carbon County, Montana, and had a population of 2,177 according to the 2000 census. The city encompasses a total area of 2.6 square miles, all of which is land. It is part of the Billings, Montana Metropolitan Statistical Area and has an elevation of 5,568 feet. The city had rich coal deposits discovered in 1866 and gold was discovered nearby in 1870. A treaty between the U.S. government and the Crow Indians in 1880 allowed the area to be settled starting April 11, 1882 and the Red Lodge post office was officially established in 1884.

It is this highway that gives Red Lodge the self-proclamation as "The Gateway to Yellowstone Park via the beautiful Beartooth Highway." It is a city well known for its outdoor recreation opportunities, which include skiing, mountain biking, and other activities that outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds will enjoy.
