North Carolina is a popular state for vacationers because it offers beaches and mountainous terrain. It's possible to find many beautiful sites as well as attractions. North Carolina also has more waterfalls than any other state in the country, which most people do not know. Of course, the majority of these waterfalls are in the mountainous areas, which are in western and northern North Carolina. When planning a vacation in North Carolina, stay away from the center of the state. This wide area doesn't have much to offer unless you plan on living there. Raleigh and Charlotte could be barely be considered central North Carolina, but you can find cities like these all around the country.
If you're a beach person, head straight for the coast. Dog Beach is known as one of the cleanest and most beautiful beaches in the country. It was featured on the Travel Channel for their Top 10 Beaches in the United States. Another great option for any beach lover is the Outer Banks. There are not many hotels in this area, so you will have to rent a home. This is nice because it keeps the area from becoming too crowded. On the other hand, renting a home in the Outer Banks is expensive. If you prefer the mountains, you will have a lot to choose from. Your thoughts should immediately go to the western part of the state, where the Smokey Mountains are located. One of the most popular vacation spots in the mountains of North Carolina is Asheville. This artsy and vibrant city is located in the foothills of the Smokey Mountains. You can find sidewalk cafes, street performers, botanical gardens, a city walk, and much more. The number one attraction is the Biltmore Estate, which is well worth visiting despite the cost.
If you travel north of Asheville, you will find Blowing Rock and Boone. Blowing Rock offers a scenic park overlooking the mountains, restaurants with amazing views, and the Tweetsie Railroad. Walking around town with all the quaint shops is also fun. Boone is best suited for skiers in the winter months. If you travel west of Asheville, you will find Lake Lure and Cherokee. Lake Lure offers a quiet lake beach with water slides, boat tours, and easy access to Chimney Rock Park. Cherokee is deeper in the mountains and offers a bear zoo, an Indian village, and a beautiful casino.
