Highlands is an incorporated town in Macon County, North Carolina with a population of 924 as of the 2010 Census. It covers a total area of 6.2 square miles and sits atop an elevation of 3,832 feet above sea level. The town was founded in 1875 by Samuel Truman Kelsey and Clinton Carter Hutchinson as a place they felt would become a great trading center along the lines they drew from Chicago to Savannah and from New Orleans to New York. The town became a place for golfing enthusiasts in the 1930s as legendary golfer Bobby Jones and a few friends founded the Highlands Country Club. You can find the country club in the Highlands, NC Yellow Pages and the Highlands, NC Business Directory.

For the outdoor recreation lovers, the town offers wonderful hiking trails, fishing grounds and a slew of scenic waterfalls. It is a popular place during the season from spring to fall, as during that time period, the population can swell up to 10,000-15,000.
