Raleigh, North Carolina is the capital city of the state of North Carolina located in the northeastern part of the state. Raleigh has a population of just over 400,000 people and is named in honor of the early English explorer Sir Walter Raleigh. As of the 2010 United States Census, Raleigh, North Carolina is recognized as the 45th largest city in the entire country.
Raleigh is known as being part of the "Research Triangle" which in the late 1950s became home to the Research Triangle Park. Raleigh, Chapel Hill, and Durham comprise the Research Triangle and the name is given to the area because three of the biggest research universities in the United States are located there: North Carolina State University in Raleigh, Duke University in Durham, and the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Research Triangle is also known as the "Silicon Valley of East" for its major computer and technology research. Medical research is also big in the area. Raleigh is also huge in history as it is the capital city of North Carolina. Raleigh has a humid subtropical climate where the fall and spring is moderate, the summer is hot and muggy, and the winters can be very cold and chilly. Raleigh is also a huge sports town. The city plays host to one major professional sports team which is the National Hockey League's Carolina Hurricanes. The Hurricanes won the Stanley Cup in 2006. The triangle is also home to the infamous "Tobacco Road" of NCAA Men's basketball where NC State, Duke, and North Carolina have a decades long rivalry in basketball. All three schools have won the NCAA national championship in the sport.
