The history of Winston-Salem dates back to 1753. This is when the first settlers moved to the area. The city was first called die Wachau. Many did not make Winston-Salem their permanent home. They were drawn to larger cities. Those that did stay, lived around a central square in the town. This became known as Salem Square. Winston became the city's official name in 1849. The city was named after war hero, Joseph Winston. The city quickly flourished. Products like tobacco and furniture placed the city on the map. In 1913, R.J.
